A truly pleasant city
Mainz is such a wonderfully walkable city with a very relaxed feel. We loved just exploring the Old Town's streets and seeing the beautiful old buildings. It has history everywhere you look, but it doesn't feel stuffy or like a museum.
So much history to see
A fantastic destination for anyone interested in history. The Gutenberg Museum is a must-see, but the whole city is filled with it, from the incredible cathedral to the old Roman ruins. Everything is so accessible and easy to get to on foot.
Great fun and good wine!
Mainz was so much fun, especially with the festive Carnival spirit in the air. The local wine bars are so cozy and serve some really good stuff. Had some Spundekäs with pretzels at a small place, which was a perfect local snack.
Lovely walks by the river
What a perfect city break. Taking a long walk along the Rhine was a real highlight, even in the winter weather. The views are great and it feels so peaceful. The city center is right there, so you get both nature and city life easily.
Beautiful old buildings
I was really impressed by the architecture here. The half-timbered houses, especially around the Kirschgarten square, are just beautiful. It all feels very authentic. The city is compact and easy to get around, which makes for a very chill visit.
Magical Christmas market
We visited for the Christmas market and it was just magical. The setting in the square with the massive Mainz Cathedral as a backdrop is incredible. The market had great food stalls and a really nice, festive feel without being too crowded.
